Sixth Grade English
Areas of Study:
- Writing Process - Students will use the writing process effectively to produce meaningful writing pieces that clearly communicate their thoughts and voice.
- Narrative and Expository Writings - Students will understand the structures and techniques for crafting different writing genres.
- Writing Development – Students will understand literary devices such as similes, metaphors, personification, alliterations, onomatopoeias, hyperboles, voice, sentence variety, etc… to craft strong writing pieces.
- Grammar – Students will be able to identify parts of speech and understand their role in building a sentence.
- Vocabulary – Students will be building their vocabulary through readings and assignments while incorporating them into their oral and written language.
- Spelling – Students will strengthen their spelling through assignments, editing of writings, and quizzes.
Student Expectations:
· Students should come willing to participate and think – their voice matters!
· Students should produce quality work and take pride in their abilities.
· Students should come to English class with the appropriate materials.
· Students should invest in their learning by preparing for tests/quizzes and having homework completed on time.
· Students should be willing to set goals and work toward them with support.
Home Assignments:
· Homework – let me start with the expectation of myself. I promise that any homework sent home will be worthwhile and reinforcing the skills and strategies that are being taught in class. In short, I won’t give ‘filler assignments.’
· Most spelling, vocabulary, and grammar homework will take approximately 20 minutes.
· Written assignments may take longer but will be assigned over a period of days if they are lengthy.
*Grading:
Writings/Tests: 40% of the total
Quizzes: 25% of the total
Homework: 20% of the total
Class work: 15% of the total
*Grade percentages may vary slightly depending on the marking period quarter.
